SONATA
FOR OBOE AND PIANO
(1995) 22 min.
The Sonata is in two movements. The
first presents an ascending, spiraling motif suggested by a prehistoric
Mimbres pottery bowl. The second movement, Fantasy Variations,
is based on an imaginary Appalachian ballad I composed. I wanted
to reflect on the North Carolina heritage I share with Philip
West, the commissioner. West premiered the piece at Columbia University
with pianist Gilbert Kalish.
