QUINTET
FOR FLUTE, GUITAR AND STRING TRIO (1996) 23 min.
instrumentation: fl, gtr, vln, vla, vcl
When I began thinking about the Quintet,
I imagined a high, sky-like space. The opening flute motif punctuates
that space, and its playful gestures soon generate constant rhythmic
activity. The guitar enters with soft ascending phrases and forms
a dance-like duo with the flute. The string trio introduces the
slow section. The guitar enters with an aria-like passage, and
free variations follow. Four short scherzos intersperse fragments
of the preceding slow music. The forth scherzo segues into the
finale section, a brisk rondo recapturing earlier themes.
